Anne Butler grew up on a hill farm in a beautiful and undiscovered area of North Dumfriesshire.

She has moved around the country since then living in Bristol, North Ayrshire and Edinburgh. In Edinburgh, Anne studied art part-time at Leith School of Art and rekindled her love of painting. Anne has a small studio in the conservation village of Durisdeer close to where she grew up. Anne is married with three grown up children.

A visit to Iona for a week’s painting produced her first work to go into an exhibition as part of a small festival in Leith - Adventfest 2004. The sale of all three pieces which were inspired by the wind and wild grasses around Iona Abbey encouraged Anne to keep painting.

Anne has produced a variety of work over the last five years but her work is predominantly landscape painting - acrylic on canvas. She enjoys working on large canvases in bright colours.

"I have always taken great pleasure from any original work - drawings done by my children, original paintings and stained glass from friends, stories and poems, outside sculptures created by many hands, a tea cosy, a tapestry, a clay pot, musical recordings of my family, a bird table made by my dad. Our cottage is full of ‘artwork’ which remind us of events and people. To have original work I believe is a lovely thing and if any of my paintings appeal to you then I am very happy to think of them hanging on your wall - there is certainly no room for them on mine!!"
